ISO 45004 gives safety teams a formal performance-evaluation guide
The 2024 standard focuses on monitoring, measurement, analysis, evaluation, and indicators—useful criteria for separating an EHS dashboard from a governed performance system.

A metric becomes useful only inside a decision system
EHS products routinely promote leading indicators, predictive analytics, and executive dashboards. ISO 45004 provides a better buyer frame: what intended result is being evaluated, how the measure is defined, whether the data is fit for purpose, who interprets it, and what action follows.
Counts of inspections, observations, or closed actions can reward activity without establishing control effectiveness. Lagging rates can also obscure changes in hours, workforce composition, reporting culture, and case mix.
A practical software evaluation test
Ask the provider to create an indicator, define its source, denominator, scope, calculation, review frequency, target, owner, and decision path. Then change the definition and verify that historical reports remain reproducible.
The publication can compare documented analytics and data-governance capabilities. It cannot conclude that one platform improves safety performance without independent, comparable outcome evidence.
Enterprise buyer test
Translate this change into the exact population, record type, workflow stage, decision owner, effective date, and evidence that could be affected. Ask current or prospective providers to demonstrate the named workflow with representative data and an exception—not a polished feature tour. Record what official documentation establishes, what a provider states, what the team observes, and what remains unresolved.
A defensible review also identifies the dependency outside the product. Authority interpretation, policy configuration, data quality, integrations, human judgment, approval rights, release governance, training, and retained evidence may remain customer or service responsibilities. The evaluation should preserve those boundaries instead of treating a technology claim as the complete operating model.
What we will watch next
Safety Operations Standard will watch the named source and affected market records for later evidence that changes status, scope, availability, implementation timing, workflow consequence, or the limits of the initial report. A later announcement does not silently overwrite this dated account; the change ledger preserves the sequence.
